Haiti - REMINDER Diaspora : 1st Annual Haitian Creative and Cultural Industries Symposium
THELAR Management Group announces the First Annual Haitian Creative and Cultural Industries Symposium (HCCIS) to be held on November 10-11, 2017 at Florida Memorial University, located at 15800 NW 42nd Ave, Miami Gardens, Florida 33054, in United States. The theme of the first edition is : "Toward organized Creative and Cultural Industries". This symposium is a first of this kind in the Haitian market, which targets artists, professionals and entrepreneurs in our creative and cultural industries.

The mission of the Haitian Creative and Cultural Industries Symposium (HCCIS) is to create a platform for Haitian artists from different arts discipline, entrepreneurs and professionals of the creative and cultural industries in Haiti and in the Diaspora to effectively address issues related to their industries in order to promote collaborative and creative strategies that will help organizing and developing these industries in Haiti to better respond to international market demands.

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), "world trade of creative goods and services totaled a record of US$624 billion dollars in 2011. At the same time, creativity and culture have a significant non-monetary value that contributes to inclusive social development, to dialogue and understanding between peoples. They empower people to take ownership of their own development." In 2007, a study entitled Arts & Economic Prosperity III published by Americans for the Arts reported that "the creative and cultural industries in the State of Florida generate $3.1 billion dollars in local economic activity in creating 88,326 full-time equivalent jobs, generating $2.1 billion dollars in household income to local residents, and delivering $446.5 million dollars in local and state government revenue. In the U.S, these industries generate $166.2 billion in economic activity annually and support 5.7 million full-time jobs. The cultural industry also generates nearly $30 billion in revenue to local, state, and federal governments every year."

Digitalization and globalization are opening new market opportunities for creative and cultural industries all around the world, particularly in developed countries like China, South Korea, United Kingdom and United States. In contrast, in Haiti, there is still a lot of discrimination against artists, entrepreneurs and professionals of the creative and cultural industries, which are considered as second-class industries. Despite the impact of these industries on the society through their productions, there is very few resources, training, and entrepreneurship, career advancement and grant programs to promote the development of these industries in order to make them a fundamental and competitive part of the economy of Haiti.

"As part of THELAR Management Group 15th Anniversary Celebration, we are proud to launch the Haitian Creative and Cultural Industries Symposium (HCCIS), an annual two-day event which will benefit not only the local Haitian-American community, but also it will have a significant impact on the State of Florida, the Haitian Diaspora, and the Caribbean region overall, while shaping the future of Haiti," said Farah Larrieux, Co-founder and Director of THELAR Management Group. Pierre-Michel Théodat, Co-founder and the visionary behind the concept of THELAR Management Group, said "The illness and funerals of Ti Manno, a legendary Haitian singer, in 1985 in United States, made me to realize the lack of social assistance for Haitian artists, and to reflect on socio-economic problems in the artistic and cultural sectors in Haiti. That's what inspired me to found a company in 2002 to better serve artists."

Panels of discussion and workshops will be conducted in English, Creole and French by professionals and representatives of global and national organizations advocated in the development of creative and cultural industries. Prominent figures of the government and lawmakers from Haiti, American arts non-profit organizations and government agencies, local and internationally known Haitian artists, entrepreneurs and professionals of different area of expertise, and young people aspiring to have a career in these industries will be among participants of this event hosted at Florida Memorial University, one of the oldest academic centers in Florida and the only Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in South Florida. "We have a large Haitian American student population here at Florida Memorial University, so we are excited to host the Haitian Symposium on our campus. It was Toussaint Louverture who said, "I invite you, citizens, to open your eyes and to give serious attention to the future". As our Haitian American student population continues to grow, this symposium renews our commitment to serving the Haitian community and we look forward to it," said Dr. Emmanuel Lalande, Vice President for Student Affairs.
