NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi is expected to participate in St Petersburg International Legal Forum to be held from May 14-18. One of the prestigious global legal conferences and precursor to St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), it is considered mini-Davos of Eurasia.

This will be first time that an Indian chief justice will participate in SPBILF, a conference that brings together the leading minds of the legal profession. In 2017, PM Narendra Modi was the chief guest at SPIEF.

The annual St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPBILF), founded in 2011, is organised by the President and the ministry of justice of the Russian Federation.

Over the years, the SPBILF has emerged as a foremost international platform for discussing a broad range of issues confronting the contemporary legal professionals, according to forum organisers.

The forum’s primary mission is to promote ideas related to modernising the law amid the global changes. This includes devising solutions that allow improved interaction among legal systems and the generation of common approaches to problems of law in the context of globalisation; modernisation of Russian law in accordance with the best international legal practices and bringing Russian legislation in compliance with international standards; development of Russian jurisprudence and legal education across the globe.

High-profile international events are staged throughout the year under the auspices of the SPILF. It introduced a new format—guest conferences — in 2013. London, The Hague, Rome, Paris and Budapest hosted guest conferences. The main purpose of guest conferences is to facilitate legal dialogue and strengthen Russia’s cooperation with its international partners.
