Family rescued after boat runs aground on Alafia River

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY , Fla. (WWSB) - One family’s day on the water ended up being quite the “adventure” after being stranded near the Alafia River.
On May 24, 2025, at about 9:15 p.m. Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for help south of Sunken and Bird Islands.
The family of four’s boat had run aground. “Our deputy was able to get their boat free and ensure everyone was OK,” the sheriff’s office posted on social media.
“We’re always ready to respond on the water when someone needs our help,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I’m glad we could assist this family stuck on the water at night and see that they could safely return to shore.”
